DOWN IN THE BAYOU

The Louisiana Bayou wasn’t far from the city, just a forty-five-minute drive, but it felt like a completely different world than what Thaddeus had been getting used to. From the moment he moved to New Orleans as a magician, he had gotten so used to those sidewalks and the crowds of happy people walking on them. The painters and the musicians and all of the other artists all around him had become something that he was used to seeing all around him; the idea of being surrounded by swamplands, trees, and wildlife sounded like some kind of hell compared to the environment that he was used to.

“This is great,” Kat said, looking around at all of the greenery around them. “I have always wondered what it was actually like in the bayou. I have seen so many films when it was shown but there’s a big difference between seeing it through the screen and…experiencing it.”

“Experiencing all of the bugs, you mean,” Thad said. “I already hate it.”

“You won’t have to deal with it for long,” Maisie said. “So suck it up for the time being. You only need to be here long enough to find that set of dolls, and then you will be back in your cozy little bookshop where you can read about people doing stuff like this.”

“I have done more interesting stuff than this,” Thad said, and he meant it. If only she knew the kinds of things that he had done with Jean. She wouldn’t be acting like he had never left his house before if she knew about half of those things. “This is nothing.”

“Oh, really? You’ve done something like this before?”

“Something like it, yeah.”

“So you have found magical artifacts before?”

“Oh yes,” Thad said with a laugh. “For better or worse. Sometimes it has been an amazing discovery and sometimes it has been something that has nearly tried to kill me. It’s all thanks to Jean. I clung to his coattails while he went on all sorts of adventures to find things that most of the world would never believe. It was all of his interest in the occult that inspired him to actually go seek out things that were cursed or enchanted, things that had remnants of magic or otherworldly powers. Then again, the first time I met him, I was the one that brought him along with me to the Winchester Mystery House, but he saved me from the actual ghosts that haunted that place.”

“That sounds like you have had a good amount of experience then.”

“Hell yes, I do!” Thad couldn’t help himself. It was almost like bragging to impress her but he just felt the urge to share what kind of things he had been through. Maybe she would really start to understand how serious he was nowadays and not at all trying to trick anyone like he used to. “Let’s see… There was the Winchester Mystery House, where I watched Jean use a spellbook to send away all of the spirits that were infesting that mansion.
